Great job distinguishing between the two! I can definitely tell the difference when you say them, although I wouldn't say that /ɑ/ is inherently nasal. The way that you say it does sound like it is, but I think you've acquired more of a Midwestern US accent (or a different accent-maybe someone can confirm).

With what I consider a neutral American accent, I would pronounce it less 'open.' The way you're saying it, it's approaching /a/, I believe (sorry, not an expert in IPA). I mean, it's still definitely an American English accent, but just so you know.From my experience, they're still very distinct even when spoken quickly. I would not shorten the vowel of doll to make it sound like dull. I'd retain the relative length of that word with respect to the rest of what I'm saying, even in fast speech.Let me know if you have any more questions.
